Unit 4 Blog

1.        Describe your experience. (Did you find it beneficial? Difficult?) Why or Why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or Why not?
My experience was mostly listening. I could not connect because I could not concentrate.I did concentrate on my breathing, but could not go further. I had too many people in my house. I have to practice; this will be difficult for me.
2.        What is the concept of “Mental Workout? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a Mental Work Out? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?
The concept of “Mental Workout” is taking time to work out our mind like we work out physically. If we stop working out mentally we will drop in our conditioning. Perserverance is necessary to achieve our goals.

  1. Hey Barb,
I found the exercise to be relaxing and interesting knowing that types like that do work. I my studio I have a great sound system as I like using music for differnt activities we do when we train. I also use music in my senior exercise classes as they find it soothing and yet exciting when they train. It allows them to let go of things if just for the one hour away from their troubles.
The mental health of people can be helped with exercise in my last term the professor had said that 50% of seniors illness can be helped with moderate exercise. The research also shows that the exercise of our brain is very important as it reproduces brain cell. Something scientist though could not be possible. I always knew that my meditation, praying, and training was better than just training in the martial arts. Now I have the science to back up what we done in the studio.

  2. Barb,

Yes, mental workouts or exercises definitely take a quiet area with no people or interruptions. It is hard enough at least for me to quiet my mind without a bunch of distractions going on.

I thought the exercise was good, parts of it were harder to feel and do than others. Maybe you will get a chance to try it again when you have a more quiet area. It is definitely something I would do again and need to do regularly to see and feel a difference.

This loving-kindness exercise is something that I can definitely feel while I am doing the exercise especially with loved ones. It is harder for me at this time to extend to much beyond that. That is why I need practice regularly.

  3. I tried it again, and I thought it was better. It is just hard for me to sit still and do this when I have so much to do. I did enjoy it.

  4. Barb,
Great post. I understand how you feel, as I had my kids running around and asking for help with their homework, etc. and then that just makes the exercise frustrating! However, luckily I am able to practice this type of exercise on a daily basis and have for about four years as a myofascial release therapist and I help walk my patients through a similar exercise. It is very beneficial, however it can take quite a few times before you feel the difference. Typically I have my clients feel their breath and their flow of energy at the same time. It does help to be in a quiet place at first and just close your eyes and picture the love being breathed in and then out. After a while it becomes second nature to do this especially in the midst of chaos because that is often when it is most needed. I have been able to change the energy of my home by doing this type of exercise. It also helps me to forgive others easily and to send them love.

  5. Barb,
This exercise was hard for me too! Life is busy and chaotic and the concept of being in a still and quiet place and concentrating on my breathing...it was a little over whelming. It will take a lot of practice and I need to make an area that is free from clutter and appropriate for relaxing. I see the benefites of mental training but the actual practice is something that is going to take a little time.

  6. I will keep trying, I just can't shut down long enough to relax and let go. I know it would be beneficial. I am more conscious about my breathing when I do this.
